This is a brief history of my experience; it is far from inclusive. It is a combination of business and family since one sometimes drives the other.
I renovated my first house, a 12 foot wide row house in Baltimore's Ridgely's Delight neighborhood in the 1980's. I spent several years in Baltimore City restoring a couple of other houses, and ended up renovating a farm house in Carroll County for the couple that bought my first house. A passion for old things developed and I began to restore antique furniture; this turned into a new carreer for me . . . buying, selling, and restoring antiques. At one of the antique malls I met my future wife, a math teacher. She is a Texan and she decided it was time to return to Texas. I proposed, we married, and we were off to Dallas. We found a 35 year-old house we liked that needed a lot of updating so I returned to working on houses. I stayed in the antique business for a couple years, but kept getting referrals for home improvement jobs. Eventually I left the antique business to become a full-time contractor. We sold the Dallas house to buy an 1887 Victorian in Waxahachie, Tx. which, of course, needed restoring.
We were in Texas ten years when we saw a house on the internet that was going up for auction. It was the Gillis-Grier house in Salisbury, Md. We flew to MD to look at it and decided to come back for the auction. Well, that was pretty simple. It got very complicated very quickly after that. We bought the house, eventually sold our other Victorian in Waxahachie, and moved to Salisbury. (Believe me, it was not nearly that simple). Since that time we have been restoring the Gillis-Grier house and building Ageless Treasures in Maryland. We have put together a well-rounded crew of craftsmen and look forward to continued success in Salisbury. One day we may even get our house done. (Our son David, who is a freshman at UMd, College Park, says he will have his degree before we finish the house).
